The Purpose of Athletics at St. Augustine School
At St. Augustine School we take athletics seriously. We see a two-fold purpose in athletics. While winning a competition is the immediate goal of an athletic event, the more lasting goal for our athletes is character development, learning how to lose with dignity and win with grace, teamwork, and overcoming our own shortfalls. We are committed to offering superior programs that train students for high achievement in their sports. We also, and more importantly, want our programs to reflect our vision of the virtuous person. We understand the Christian student athlete as growing “to maturity, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13).
Because our education integrates the intellect, will, emotions and appetites, both in body and spirit, athletics play a crucial role in the formation of the integrated person into the life of Christ. The practice and application of athletics forms the human spirit, mind and body in ways that cannot be accomplished solely in the classroom.
