St. John Henry Newman, Doctor of the Church
Today Pope Leo XIV announced that St. John Henry Newman will be made the 38th Doctor of the Church! Fr. Ian Ker of Oxford, a major influence on the Catholic Studies movement, advocated for Newman being enrolled among the Doctors of the Church for forty years. His dream has now come true. Other Doctors of the Church include Augustine, Thomas Aquinas and Catherine of Siena. A Doctor of the Church is a model of theology- of how we go about coming to know the Living God. Furthermore, St. John Henry Newman (1801-1890) is the most important writer on Catholic education since the Reformation, has been the guiding light for the renewal of faithful Catholic universities in America, and has deeply influenced our understanding of education at St. Augustine's. St. John Henry Newman, pray for us!
